A stepping stone to employment

Community placements are an opportunity for you to become involved in your community while you learn basic work and life skills, get experience and make contacts for future employment.

Volunteering gives you new interests, new people to meet and renewed energy.

You can

  • Acquire skills and gain valuable experience (every experience is a learning experience)

  • Provide recent references for your resume

  • Network and employment references (the most effective job search method)

  • Enhance your self-esteem and improve confidence

  • Find out if your chosen career goal is truly right for you

Time involved

  • Up to 70 hours per month is the most you can volunteer and there is no minimum

  • Placements last no longer than six months or may be a series of projects or special events

  • Volunteer hours are flexible and able to fit into your schedule

You can develop your own idea for a community placement and have it recognized as a community placement activity. This placement could fit closely with your career goals and/or with an agency that is “near and dear to your heart”.

If you are already volunteering in your community, you may be able to have this recognized as a community placement under Ontario Works.

Municipalities, community groups, non-profit organizations, and associations can develop ideas for placements and the Community Placement Coordinator will match skills and experience and refer you to the opportunity. You can be assured you will not be replacing any position where there has been a lay off in the last two years.

Please be assured that when accepting a volunteer position with any agency that they will respect your confidentiality with all matters related to your involvement with the Ontario Works program.

The Task Force offers help to complete special projects and assists at local events throughout Haldimand County and Norfolk County. The Task Force has built a reputation of having a hard working team of people who are flexible, dependable and capable. We will provide you with transportation, proper clothing and safety training. You will be treated as any other volunteer with the agency and the agency will do their best to make the volunteer work an enjoyable experience.

Lend your skills and abilities at the Caledonia Fair, Dunnville Fair, Bayfest, Backus Mill, Long Point Conservation Authority, Panorama, etc. and receive the community’s thanks, gain recent work experience and expand your network of potential employers and contacts.

Mileage for your transportation to your volunteer position may be covered. Cost of child care while you are volunteering is available. If a criminal reference check is required by the agency you are volunteering for there will be no cost to you. Clothing and equipment needed for your volunteer position may be covered.

Volunteering is a gift in all of us to give.  We know it is rewarding to help someone in our community while we are being helped.
